Simona Smirnova is a Lithuanian born jazz vocalist, composer and zitherist based in New York City. She is regularly performing locally in New York jazz venues with her quartet, as well as touring in different parts of the world, such as Australia, New Zealand and Europe.
Simona’s performing style is known for its unique theatrical flavor, genre-bending, and virtuosic vocal scat improvisation. Her performances entitled by ‘Bird Language’ are a musical controversy between tribal roots, zither sounds, and chants incorporated into urban musical styles such as jazz and rock.
Her latest album, “A Hunger Artist,” blends haunting vocals with elements of Lithuanian folk, jazz and even musical theater to convey the narrative of Franz Kafka’s short story by the same title, which can be found on iTunes, Spotify and all other major streaming platforms.
The most recent project of Simona is her original 81 min score written for a silent film “The Passion of Joan of Arc” (1928). The score combines a live string quartet, kanklės and Simona’s vocals.
Classically trained on Lithuanian zither, Simona earned her BA in jazz vocals at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theater. Shortly after receiving the European Touring Scholarship, she moved to the United States to study at Berklee College of Music where she majored in Contemporary Composition and Production and graduated in 2015.

"Simona was an excellent piano teacher! She always came prepared and had excellent knowledge of theory and a great ear for rhythm and precision when playing. If a strategy is not working, she is flexible and knows how to teach using different styles and techniques until you understand. As a working professional, she was also flexible and willingly to work with my sometimes unpredictable schedule. Lastly, she is kind and warm and gets you excited about playing at your best. I highly recommend."
"I feel so lucky to have Simona as my teacher. She really knows how to engage with me and to tailor-make a curriculum that fits my level and my needs. I learned a lot from her. She is also very responsive to emails and texts. I would recommend her to anyone."
"Simona is my 5 year old daughter’s piano teacher. My daughter loves to go to her piano lessons because of Simona’s bubbly and friendly demeanor. My daughter has learned a lot from Simona. She now knows the difference between certain notes, the two different clefs and is still trying to master her sight reading skills. I love going to the lessons mostly because I get to hear Simona sing. That is a real treat! I would highly recommend her to anyone seeking a piano or vocal teacher."
My 9 year old son started learning the piano from Simona a year ago and he loves the piano. When he completed a year, he was thrilled and looked forward to many more years learning from Simona. Simona and the way she teaches has played a crucial role in my son discovering the joy of music. Simona has the ability to know where the student is and teach keeping that in mind which makes the teaching experience of so much more value as compared to a cookie-cutter approach. Simona makes the class fun. She is able to relate the topics to kids in a way in which they can easily understand. She is also very patient and at the same time, knows when to gently nudge the student towards his potential. As a person, we find Simona to be very amiable and calm. Simona is an exceptional teacher and we consider our son very fortunate to have her as his piano teacher.
